Unreliable Internet Connections Mean More than Just Downtime

Unreliable Internet Connections (1)Network downtime is, on a certain level, unavoidable. We do what we can to minimize and protect against it, but it still happens. With an Information Technology Intelligence Consulting (ITIC) Research study finding that an hour of downtime costs 98% of businesses at least $100,000, it's worth protecting against. Downtime doesn't just cost that six-figure hit, however...it costs a lot more than that.

What Are the True Costs of an Unreliable Connection?

An unreliable connection means damaged productivity, but that's not the only place it can do damage. From customer perception to internal security, an unreliable connection means trouble.

Lost customers. An Aberdeen Group report found that 20% of all mobile websites see customers leaving with just two seconds of delay. For three seconds, that number jumps to 40%. Even the slightest delay is enough to see consumers jump ship, and once customers leave, winning them back is a challenge for any site. Internet connectivity must be reliable enough to keep customers in the fold.

Security failings. Domain Name Service (DNS) is a major part of internet connectivity, allowing users to readily connect to sites. DNS is also where one of the most notorious types of internet attack comes from, the distributed denial of service (D DoS) attack. Without properly optimized connectivity, it becomes that much easier to derive a DDoS attack that can cripple online operations for hours or more.

Employee morale suffers. A loss of employee productivity doesn't just hurt the bottom line, it also hurts the employee's own perception about the company. An

Evolven study found that lowered employee morale was one intangible cost of downtime. Some might even start questioning if you're planning layoffs and act accordingly; after all, if you can't keep the internet connectivity strong, how long can you sign paychecks?
